Kinedyne’s Coil Chock and Friction Mat combine to control steel coils, which have a tendency to roll and concentrate their massive weights in one small area of a trailer.

The longer, adjustable chock is made with heavy-duty, quarter-inch ASTM A36 grade steel sheet, and combines with a textured mat to evenly distribute coil weights across the trailer and better stabilize loads, the company says.

Kinedyne’s Heavy-Duty Adjustable Coil Chock measures 40 x 4 inches, and includes three bracing positions to support multiple coil sizes. The 48 x 6 x ½-inch friction mat is also made with steel belts that are covered on both sides by recycled rubber. The measurements allow the entire chock to sit on the mat, offering more stability.

Coil chocks – also known as coil bunks – are often combined with 4×4 lumber or other hardwood timbers to stabilize metal coils on flatbed trailers, Kinedyne adds. The chocks are designed to be used with chains and binders to keep the coil from rolling around.

The chock keeps the coil off the deck, preventing damage, and using timbers alone without a chock isn’t always safe or effective, a company official says.

Coils can weigh anywhere from 5,000 to 60,000 lb., and any metal coil shipments that collectively weigh 5,000 lb. or more need to be secured by following North American cargo securement standards.
